The Paleolithic of northwestern Zagros. 2012–2019 MAFGS Survey: Data and preliminary results

Between 2012 and 2019, the surveys conducted by French archaeological mission of Soulaimanih Governorate in Rania Peshadar plains Iraqi Kurdistan, previously devoid Paleolithic records, have yielded numerous lithic assemblages from open-air sites, caves rock-shelters. We present here six three districts surveyed, Rania, Peshdar Dukan. Despite absence chronostratigraphic contexts still fragmentary data, first typo-technological analyses carried out allow us to propose a techno-cultural attribution and, more specifically for some assemblages, Middle Paleolithic. Among sites uncovered, it is certainly shelter Sarsyan-Rostam Agha that was most distinctive which represents, with Shanidar cave, one rare preserved northwestern Zagros. Its sequence, rich remains, explored test-pit 2018, shows clear affinities Mousterian Zagros industries, well-defined entity based on such as Shanidar, Bisitun, Warwasi Mar Tarik. Les prospections de la archéologique française du gouvernorat Soulaimaniah (MAFGS) menées entre et 2019 dans les plaines au Kurdistan irakien, zone jusqu’alors quasi-dépourvue en paléolithiques, ont permis découvrir, surface, nombreux lithiques issus plein air, grottes ou abris sous-roche.
